Brittania Hut, Saas Fee

Brittania Hut, Saas Fee

Day one was in Zinal – visibility wasn’t amazing, but terrain and snow were both beyond adequate description.  Would have been hard to have designed a better mediocre-visibility day, and it wouldn’t have been the same without our friend the “local” who knew where to go, Sion Brocklehurst.  OK, Leysin isn’t local really, but local enough…

Day two was over in Saas Fee; snow not as good, and more tracks, but the terrain is alpine-superlative, and skiing with Stokes-Rees is always humbling and emboldening in equal measure…  Had a few big lines, lots of charging pow, hopping over rocks and rises on lots of differing snow-types, but the probable highlight was pushing far, far away from all the tracks, up to the Britannia hut and then putting in first tracks down 1,300m down to Saas Almagell.  Sure, it had wind-packed snow, it had scoured patches, most of the pitches weren’t that steep and it was only really at the bottom that the snow was really that perfect, even, soft hero snow – but it was wild, open and beautiful, and had that exploration feel which you just can’t get without stepping beyond what you know…

I love it.

More to come when I get my act together and take photos / videos of the cameras,
